Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. Iron Maiden are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide without significant mainstream or radio support. They are also often considered the leaders of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). They released their first album in 1980, the self titled Iron Maiden, and have released 13 albums since then (In the years 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006).

Their lineup has changed dramatically over the years, with only Dave Murray and Steve Harris appearing on all of the Maiden albums.

The lineup for the first album consisted of Steve Harris (Bass), Dennis Stratton (Guitar), Clive Burr (Drums), Dave Murray (Guitar) and Paul DiAnno (Vocals). This lineup lasted only as long as the first album, with Dennis Stratton being replaced by Adrian Smith for the Killer's album.
Following the Killer's album, Paul Di'Anno was dropped in favor of Bruce Dickinson. After the Number of the Beast album, Clive Burr was replaced by Nicko McBrain. At this stage, the lineup was:

Steve Harris (Bass), Adrian Smith (guitar), Nicko McBrain (Drums), Dave Murray (Guitar) and Bruce Dickinson (Vocals). This lineup, considered to be the classic lineup, would continue until the conclusion of the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tour in 1989, when Adrian Smith left the band. He was replaced by Janick Gers. Bruce soon left the band as well, leaving in 1994, to be replaced by Blaze Bayley. This lineup continued until 1999, when Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson returned to the band, and Blaze Bayley left. This led to the current line up.

The current line up is Steve Harris (Bass), Adrian Smith (Lead Guitar), Dave Murray (Lead Guitar), Janick Gers (Lead Guitar), Nicko McBrain (Drums) and Bruce Dickinson (Vocals).

Some have described the sound of Iron Maiden as "soaring vocals, beautiful arrangements, infectious melodies, sweeping solos, face shredding riffs and galloping bass". Iron Maiden songs vary, ranging from softer songs such as Journeyman to the fast riff's and solo's of Aces High. There is no sentence that sum's up their sound, it is an individual experience.
