Iron Monkey
Iron Monkey was a sludge metal band that formed in Nottingham, England in 1994. The original members were Justin Greaves (drums, ex-Bradworthy), Johnny Morrow (vocals), Jim Rushby (guitar), Steve Watson (guitar, ex-Cerebral Fix) and Doug Dalziel (Bass, ex-Ironside). The members all had experience playing in the British underground and they each brought different influences to the fold. The group's sound was influenced by the doom metal and crust punk genres and in particular by bands such as Grief, Black Sabbath and Eyehategod. The end result is a ghastly combination of vitriolic aggression, downtuned riffage, huge underlying grooves and inhuman screams.
Church of Misery
Church of Misery is a doom metal band from Tokyo, Japan. Church of Misery's style melds early-era Black Sabbath style doom with psychedelic rock. Like the American death metal group Macabre, most of their songs are about different serial killers. After several releases on small independent record labels, they released the EP Murder Company on Man's Ruin Records, then moved on to Southern Lord Records to release their debut full length LP, Master of Brutality. In 2004 they released their second full length album, The Second Coming. That same year Japan's Leaf Hound Records released a compilation of their early works. Most recently they have released three split EPs, two with Sourvein and one with Deer Creek. They have also released a live DVD of their 2005 European tour.
About the split
Iron Monkey in 1998 had all ready released the classic Our Problem album on Earache and were riding a huge (relatively) wave of underground support and adulation. In comparison, their partners in crime on this split CD, Japan's Church of Misery were still relatively unknown having just had the one split with sHeavy at the time. Still, when you listen to these six songs it’s pretty obvious at least to me, as to who walks away with the top honours. Church of Misery's three song contribution here is absolutely the best they've ever done. Fantastic stuff. Having said that, Iron Monkey was always a terrific band and their own contribution to the Split (including a cover of CoC's Kiss of Death) was pretty damn kickass too. This split sees the compilation of Iron Monkey's We've Learned Nothing ep with Church of Misery's Murder Company ep.
