Description:

[1991] Necrology

Quote:
Lack of originality is not always a terrible thing. "Carcass clones." Well, I don't think this band has the exact Carcass clone vibe going on. The lyrics are based in gore and medical terminology, much like early Carcass. The music does have a Carcass-esque vibe, but there is much more behind this band. The music is brutal and fast at times, while at others it is very mid-tempo. This band has a lot going for them. In 1991, the gore/grind scene was beginning to reach more audiences, and General Surgery is no expection to that movement.
Necrology is often considered General Surgery's crowning achievement, though it's not hard to see why, considering the terrible recording quality of the work prior. This album really sees the band branching out with excellent results. Although they are veterans in the sceen, I look for them make an impact with future releases, if they are marketed correctly.
The music is expertly executed and even the faster songs (such as "Slithering Maceration of Ulcerous Facial Tissue) are not overbearing. The music, although fast and brutal, still has an air of accessibilty.
This album is HIGHLY recommended to those into early Carcass, Impaled, and anybody who wants to hear what the early 90's gore/grind movement was all about.

[2003] Split with County Medical Examiners

Quote:
After a 10 year hiatus General Surgery are back with a vengeance. This time teaming up with The County Medical Examiners. When most bands go on a ten year break you'd expect a lesser release than their classic stuff but General Surgery really pulls through. These songs are a bit different than the ones on their classic 93' release "Necrology". Not as raw and a bit more complex. Still absolutely great stuff though. Heavy riffs, great low and high growls, and hammering drums. Lyrics are pretty much the same topics, gore, pathological and some humor.
Now for County Medical Examiners. What a great match with General Surgery. Another great Carcass worshiping band. Sounds like Carcass era Symphones of Sickness. The vocals are made up of low growls and higher screams. The lyrics are a little more thoughtout mainly because some members were actually med. students. All and all this split delivers on both fronts and leaves nothing lacking.

[2006] Left Hand Pathology

Quote:
Having released numerous EP's and split singles since 1991 it's taken a whopping 15 years for General Surgery to release their debut full-length album, but it's been worth the wait. The first thing to point out is the sole reason this doesn't get 5 stars: being goregrind this is a highly derivative album - a hint of early Entombed/Dismember here and there but mostly Carcass-worship as per most of the genre, with the band occasionally sounding like a Stars In Your Eyes tribute to `Necroticism'-era Carcass - but they do it so well it's well nigh impossible for any fans of Carcass not to love this to bits. As with mid-period Carcass General Surgery have a perfect balance between all-out blastbeat grind and slower groovier riffing, and short of Carcass themselves coming back from the grave this is about as good a tribute as you can expect. Highly derivative yes, but undeniably enjoyable stuff, along with the likes of Impaled and Exhumed this is very high-quality Carcass-worshipping goregrind, and a must for all fans of the genre.

All at 192kb/s except for Necrology and Filth split at 128 and LHP at high VBR.

Basically, if you like Carcass when they played good stuff, you'll dig these guys.
